Teacher's gifts, what do they REALLY want?

Hey parents! Its June which means school’s almost out!!  You know what that means! Its time to buy teacher’s gifts ….insert poopy face emoji.

Man, these teacher’s gifts though! Every year I try to think of something more ingenious! Something that will make the teacher say “oh that Mrs. Tegola….she’s just so thoughtful! They didn’t cheap out at all!”

I try not to cheap out.  I mean how much do people spend anyway when it comes to teachers gifts? If you have a couple kids in school, and they want to give gifts to every teacher they have (french teacher, gym teacher etc) then you could be dishing out for 6 gifts at least!

Then if you really wanna be a brown noser, you go and buy gifts for the office and the principle, vice principal, the CUSTODIAN …uh oh….I think I’ve been cheaping out. Writing this just made me realize there really is a VILLAGE of people that make my kids life at school a better one. Hmmm….. if I let myself think in this vein, it could really get into the CHA-CHING.

But here’s the real question. Isn’t it really about how much you and your kid liked their teacher? For that special teacher that yelled, singled your kid out in class and occasionally made them cry, I highly recommend a special gift …. something….organic and possibly lit on fire for effect.

Then we have those teachers that are simply amazing, the ones that have managed to bring out the “gifted” side in your child, for those ones we try to give something nice.

But what’s considered nice? This post may shock you, as all of it was straight from the horses mouth.

Here’s the scoop! Wanna know if you’ve been sucking at teachers gifts or the favourite gift of the year? I did a poll with approximately 100 teachers on a bunch of Mommy groups and heres what they had to say. Drum roll please……..

GIFT CARDS.

Starbucks cards, dollar store cards (for classroom supplies), spa cards, Indigo cards, Barnes and Noble (not sure if we have that in Canada), and of course LCBO! Hey, my kids drive me to drink so why not them?

I actually had one teacher say she loves all gift cards except TIM’s (Tim Hortons!) and would regift that…… is she not CANADIAN?? I think that was A SIN to say. But whatever.

Although THIS list might make you feel a little bad…

Heres what teachers said they DON’T like:

  • lotions and potions ( spa stuff) – side note I’ve bought this one time and time again.
  • water bottles
  • MUGS –  everyone said they can only have so many mugs and PLEASE no more!
  • picture frames
  • homemade crafts like plant pots that are painted (i think again, because they can only keep so many)
  • candles (yikes guilty as charged!)
  • bath n body stuff (guilty again)
  • engraved things and personalized stuff  (yikes I thought I was being unique…)
  • figurines (that’s just creepy)

And the NUMBER ONE thing that pretty much all teachers said they could do without :

CHOCOLATES!!

Apparently chocolates are the most re-gifted thing ever and a double whammy for those mugs that come with chocolate and candy already in them haha!

Now, just in case you were wondering what the WEIRDEST gifts were.

Oh dear, I can’t even believe these gifts were real. Here goes..

Lingerie

I mean who in their right mind would buy their teacher a negligee and a matching robe?. Embarrassing for sure, seeing how the kid insisted she open it with the Father standing there smiling…..ew.

Vag Wipes

This one tops the cake though. …..yep you read that right, Vaginal wipes. I’m thinking that one goes under the bag of fresh dog poop category. #mosthatedteacherever  Yikes.

I posted this on several Facebook groups and really, the thread went on and on and I have so say even though it was for information purposes….. there were a few things going through my head.

First, these people took the time to buy you a gift so be thankful, as some teachers kind of complained …..(but then I remembered it was me that asked what they liked and what they hated…. I actually wrote the word HATE) so I think I may have brought that one on myself.

Also the biggest thing teachers appreciated was gift cards. Gift cards of every sort. If you’re buying teachers anything other than gift cards, I’d say that gift is either re-gifted or in the trash within 60 seconds of no one looking.

Thing is, it’s a gift. What happened to ‘it’s the thought that counts’? In fact, when I was growing up, if you bought a gift certificate, then it wasn’t considered thoughtful because you didn’t take the time to look for something personal. When did things get so out of hand? And spending more than $50 per teacher is getting outrageous!

Then there’s the class gifts for every occasion and this whole thing just gets a bit nuts. I mean my kids must bring home at least 50 pencils a year!

So tell me, how did you rank on teacher gift giving?  Do you give great gifts? I certainly rank in the ‘re-gift’ zone, so I’ll be getting them all LCBO gift cards and they can knock themselves out! As for the rest of the staff, I am hereby making a point to thank you for all the work you do to make my little angels better people…. I think there was some nice chocolates on sale at Walmart… ;))

Wishing you a fun teacher gifting time,

Michelle xo
